The Department of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin in August 2018. Our new colleague will teach courses in the Greek and Latin languages, as well as courses on the history of ancient Greece and Rome. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated research in the social and/or cultural history of the ancient world, and to those with an interest in and ability to contribute to one or more of following interdisciplinary programs: Africana Studies; Asian Studies; Environmental Studies; Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies; International Studies; Latin American & Latino Studies; Middle Eastern Studies; and Peace & Conflict Studies. Experience collaborating with undergraduates on research will be considered an asset.
This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a full-salary one-semester research leave prior to tenure review, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. The Department of Classical Studies at Brandeis University invites applications for a beginning or advanced tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialty in Latin Language and Literature, to begin in Fall 2018. The successful candidate will teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses in Latin language and literature and a variety of courses in ancient Roman culture or literature in translation. Ability to teach Greek is also welcome and desired. We are especially eager to hear from candidates whose teaching interests complement our areas of strength and engage with other disciplines or support Brandeis’ core mission of Social Justice, including courses in material culture, digital humanities, race and gender in the ancient world, and classical receptions.
Candidates should demonstrate excellence or a strong promise of excellence in both research and in teaching. The successful candidate will work with other department members to help reinvigorate and expand our elementary Latin program and to support our thriving Master’s program in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies. A well-rounded candidate will be able to advise undergraduate majors at all levels of their studies, mentor seniors on independent projects covering a wide variety of topics, and serve as a mentor and advisor to graduate students working on Masters papers or theses. Our full-time teaching load is 4 courses per year (2 courses per semester). A Ph.D. in Classics, Classical Studies, or Latin Language and Literature is required.

Expectations include teaching one course each semester, advocating for the Humanities through workshops & public lectures and engaging with students & faculty in the department, college & university as well as the East Carolina community at large about the importance of studying languages, literatures & cultures.

In September 2017, prof. dr. Klaas Bentein was awarded a Starting Grant by the European Research Council, entitled ‘Everyday Writing in Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt. A socio-semiotic study of communicative variation’ (EVWRIT, 2018 – 2023). He is now opening three research positions on the project, two at the level of PhD candidate (full-time, four years), and one at the level of Post-doctoral fellow (full-time, four years).
