This posting through the WCC may clarify some questions about the Whitman Environmental Studies/Classics position:

I write as the chair of Whitman College’s search committee for a
tenurable position in Environmental Humanities/Classics...This
position is a little unusual, for we are seeking a classicist who can
teach both languages at all undergraduate levels, but the successful
candidate must have a serious interest in Environmental Studies. For a
classicist this might mean any number of things: from Pastoral Poetry to
Pre-Socratic Philosophy, from Lucretius to Columella, etc, etc, etc.
Our new hire will have the enviable opportunity to develop a curriculum
which will engage our students and integrate an historical perspective
from the humanities into our Environmental Studies program. We seek,
especially, an applicant pool as diverse as possible, and we define
diversity as widely as possible. Please consider bringing this position
to the attention of any candidates you might consider suitable. The
position is listed in the APA’s /Positions for Classicists,/ and the
complete advertisement can be found here:

Oh for the sake of all things ancient, I have once again gotten Bucknell's ad posted twice. It would be nice if the wiki wouldn't kick back my ad, telling me it is too long, but then post it anyway. By the time it posts, I have submitted a shorter ad.

At any rate, everyone, just to confirm: Bucknell University now has a new 2-year replacement position and a 3-year Latinist position.

Just fyi, I would like to highly recommend the Stanford IHUM Postdoctoral Fellowship program, whose online app deadline is today: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/undergrad/ihum/fellows/applicants.html

I have loved my time here and am leaving, as have most of the other classicists before me, for an excellent t-t job. The pedagogical and research support here is amazing, as are the staff and adminstrators.

They have a shortage of ancient historians, in particular, and classical lit specialists in general expected next year and will be looking for a few good candidates. Warning: the process is slow and you might not have resolution till late April.

Have to second the opinion of the previous poster on Stanford IHUM fellowship. Great students, great faculty and staff support, great experience. Good luck to everyone who applies!

I'm tempted to resign from my job to make a six-figure income from the comfort of my home, and say "So long, suckers!!! I'm just going to be here on the Internet, just stone cold writin' stuff about stuff."

My only hesitation is that I recall a monitory voice from my youth, saying "Seems like the more money we come across, the more problems we see."

I definitely don't want more problems: who would? So what should I do? Was Biggie wrong? He's never steered me wrong before now... Help!

Candidates should send ONLY a cover letter, by e-mail, with curriculum vitae (as attachments, preferably in PDF format), indicating ability and experience in teaching Greek, Latin and classical culture courses at all undergraduate levels. Position Announcement

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, TWIN CITIES
POST-DOCTORAL ASSOCIATE IN PAPYROLOGY/RESEARCH SPECIALIST IN PAPYROLOGY

The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies (CNES) at the University of Minnesota, in association with the School of Physics and Astronomy (University of Minnesota) and the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Project (Oxford University) seeks a post-doctoral fellow in papyrology for two years. The successful candidate, who will be based in Minnesota, will work with an international team using online tools to engage a distributed volunteer community of "citizen papyrologists" in transcribing a large number of papyrus texts written in ancient Greek.

The collections of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri project (www.papyrology.ox.ac.uk) are a rich resource. Previous work to transcribe them en masse relied on image processing techniques that were unable to recover reliable Greek text. The problem faced in classifying and transcribing large numbers of the papyri is one of pattern recognition, a task to which the human brain is well suited. By using a flexible web-based interface, the job of transcribing is shared not only with a small number of scholars, but also with a force of volunteers spread around the globe. The web interface is already under development at Oxford and will be hosted through the Zooniverse citizen science portal (http://www.zooniverse.org). The Minnesota post-doctoral fellow will be joining a small team working to ensure that data produced by volunteer transcribers is useful to papyrological scholars.

This is a two-year, grant-funded, full-time appointment beginning August 29, 2011.

The post-doctoral fellow will play a pivotal role in managing the citizen science project, interpreting the ensuing data, and contributing to graduate education and departmental activities in CNES. Responsibilities will include:

• Collaboration with Drs. Dirk Obbink and James Brusuelas (Oxford) and the Zooniverse team (at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere) to support citizen researchers, collate results, and prepare material for publication
• Collaboration with UMN scientists and computational statisticians in their efforts to apply computational algorithms to the character strings produced by the citizen science interface.
• Supervision of graduate research assistants in CNES
• Teaching one advanced course per year in CNES
• Visits to Oxford to meet with the papyrology team there and examine the Oxyrhynchus materials in person
• Presentation of interim results at major scholarly meetings

Candidates must hold a PhD in Classics, Ancient History, or related fields, with a focus on papyrology. Experience working with papyrological collections is essential. Experience working with digital images and large databases is preferred, but not required.

Exceptional candidates who are ABD with a completion date in the near future will also be considered; these candidates would be appointed as Research Specialists and MUST APPLY FOR THAT POSITION, not the post-doctoral position.

All candidates should submit a letter of application and CV using the online system (see below) by July 18, 2011. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted by the application deadline. Applications received by July 18, 2011 will receive full consideration, but the search will remain open until the position is closed or filled.
